Strong drum beats rise from the yard and the rhythms draw me in. I find the girls on the back hill dancing as Joyce plays a yellow water container with a small pointed stick with all the heart and sound resonance of a five hundred dollar drum. She skillfully creates the sounds and tones of any calf skin and the girls dance to the beats, shaking their booties like no white woman ever could.
