Honor your Local Veterans with a
Veteran's Day Celebration
This curriculum has been designed to fit into Language Arts or Social Studies classes (ideally both). A strong history element can be woven into the curriculum or left out depending on needs.
The history components include (but are not limited to) a WWI into WWII role play and trench simulation. WWII boot camp, outdoor curriculum and book study. Focused on close reading, expert files, galleries, and critical thinking, students ask themselves and answer big questions about the costs of war and what we can learn from history.
The war, peace, and veteran curriculum focuses on critical thinking and authentic action. It is a community based, service learning curriculum designed to engage students in deep thinking and creative product. Students study peace, war and veterans through a historical lens comparing and contrasting wars, technology, and community involvement. The culminating project is a celebration to honor local veterans on Veteran's Day or Memorial day. Students plan, market, prepare and participate in the celebration. They have decision making power and can take the event in many directions: a performance, meal, art show, are some of the outcomes we have created.
